Currently OBI operates three DIY superstores spread throughout Slovenia

Currently OBI operates three DIY superstores spread throughout Slovenia: at Koper in the far west of the country, as well as in the capital of Ljubljana, and at Maribor, a town situated in the east. Koper and Ljubljana were opened as recently as 14 and 15 May 2002, and the opening of one further outlet at Kranj, north of Ljubljana, is projected for 2003.
The store in Ljubljana is OBI’s biggest outlet in Slovenia at 12 000 m².
OBI’s exclusive franchising partner in Slovenia is MG Market, whose managing director, Brane Gajic, also has responsibility for the OBI outlets. They are connected to the franchise system headquarters in Vienna on an organisational level.
The three OBI outlets have a combined retail area of 28 000 m². The store in Ljubljana, which covers almost 12 000 m² — 4 300 m² of which is taken up by the Gartenparadies garden centre – is at present the group’s showpiece outlet. A staff of 90 is employed there, and around 220 in the whole of Slovenia. Common to all OBI outlets is their location in the area directly around large shopping centres with high customer traffic; there are no plans for stand-alone stores in the future either.
The average sale in the Slovenian OBI stores, according to Brane Gajic, is similar to that in Austria. And the range of products available is also comparable to what can be obtained in Austrian or German outlets; 25 per cent of the goods are sourced from Slovenian suppliers, especially paints and varnishes as well as bathroom taps and fittings.
Slovenian suppliers are the source of 25 per cent of the goods.
The group’s current plans up until 2005 foresee a total of seven OBI outlets, which should cover the DIY market in Slovenia and ensure market leadership as well.
