Retailers from all over the world are expected at Chicago’s McCormick Place for the National Hard-ware Show, held in conjunction with International Hardware Week and set to run from 10 to 12 August

With more than 2 000 exhibitors spread out over two halls, this show is the hardware and DIY industry’s second largest event after Cologne. Attendance figures for last year’s fair show that almost 42 000 visitors registered for it, with 20 per cent of attendees coming from 71 different countries.
International exhibitors
The international flavour was evident on the exhibitor side as well: around 40 per cent of last year’s exhibitors came from abroad. This year will again see many of the overseas exhibits showcased as part of international pavilions from Europe, Central America and the Far East.
Last year saw 20 per cent of the 42 000 visitors come from abroad.
The show’s floor plan will again be organised into quadrants to give visitors a good idea of what is available and to make it easy for them to find their way. The product segments include:
- Hardware and allied lines
- Plumbing, electical, heating and ventilation
- Paint and home decorating
- Lawn, garden and outdoor living
- Building products
- Housewares
A great number of new products will be on display in a separate New Products Exposition, which was moved last year to a more prominent location in the centre of McCormick South. Retailers can also learn more about the latest product introductions through special, centrally located kiosks.
High visitor quality
Trade visitors attend the fair for a variety of reasons. Some make their way to Chicago in order to find new trading partners and discuss business issues with colleagues. The overwhelming majority, however, come to buy. According to the organisers, four out of ten attending companies have budgets of a million dollars or more to spend at the show.
The National Hardware Show will get underway in Chicago on 10 August.
This year’s event will once again welcome not only representatives of DIY chains, but visitors from all channels of distribution, including timber and builders’ merchants, paint and decorating, garden and industrial distribution. Among the buyers in attendance last year were representatives from Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Wal- green and Costco.
Service for international guests
International visitors can take advantage of the International Visitors & Business Center, which is sponsored by the US Department for Commerce within the context of its international buyers programme. Available here to international guests are lounges and meetareas, as well as an interpreter service if required. It is also possible to make use of the telephone and e-mail services.
On Monday 11 August, immediately following the World Powers Forum, all international visitors and exporting US exhibitors are invited to a complimentary reception that offers the chance to meet colleagues from all over the world.
Broad supporting programme
International Hardware Week, held in parallel to the National Hardware Show, will once more offer a broad range of informative events and seminars. One of the focal events will be the World Powers Forum 2003, conducted by AHMA and the trade magazine Home Channel News. Pioneers in the industry from all over the world will shed light on developments in the global marketplace and how their companies are positioning themselves.
Many of the international suppliers display their products on international pavilions.
As in recent years, a tour of DIY stores scheduled for 13 August will provide an insight into the US retail scene. No details about the outlets to be visited were available before going to print. For more information go to ahma@ahma.org or www.nationalhardwareshow.com.
