A report on the world DIY market

02.04.2004

The world DIY market grew by 6.5 per cent in 2002 to achieve gross sales of € 396 bn, according to the latest World DIY Report compiled by FEDIYMA

North America and Europe together make up 90.5 per cent of the world market, although the two continents represent only 19 per cent of the world’s population. The DIY sales of these two continents are running at € 358.2 bn, and last year’s increase amounted to 6.9 per cent. These are some of the facts that are revealed by the World DIY Report 2003 from FEDIYMA (Federation of European DIY Manufacturers’ Associations).
The North American continent alone accounts for a 61.2 share of the world market that comes to € 242.4 bn. A total of € 115.8 bn, or a 29.2 per cent share, goes to Europe.
Asia and Oceania make up 7.8 per cent of the global volume at € 31 bn. The main players here are Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The report further stresses the continuing opening up of China to the DIY market, though it represents only 0.03 per cent of the world market so far. Southeast Asia, with the exception of Taiwan and the Philippines, is still not of any importance. Significant development can be noted in Africa. In the opinion of the authors, several projects undertaken by a French chain in Morocco and Tunesia could become interesting. Investment by European DIY retailers in South America has been scaled down because of the economic difficulties being experienced on this continent. The North American DIY multiples have withdrawn from this market since 2001.
