Record year for Swiss window market

23.03.2005

After making relatively sluggish progress over recent years, the Swiss window market achieved growth of 3.7 per cent in terms of volume for the year 2004

When combined with 3 per cent growth in terms of value, this resulted in the year 2004 turning out positively for the Swiss window market. This emerges from the latest study produced by the Interconnection Consulting Group. Whereas the market was still declining in 2002 and only slight growth of 1.2 per cent was achieved in 2003, the year 2004 initiated a period of stronger growth within the Swiss window market. A positive trend is also being forecast for the years 2005 and 2006.
Renovations driving growth
The total of around 2.2 mio units sold last year has set a record for windows to date, which will be exceeded quite consideraby by 2006, in the opinion of the market researchers. One of the crucial factors behind this result was the positive development of the renovating segment, which showed an increase of just 2.4 per cent in 2004, it is true, but which is expected to drive growth increasingly strongly in subsequent years. New-build housing, which reached a peak of 37 000 completed residential units in 2004, has also boosted window sales.
Shift in frame material
In terms of the material used for frames, wooden windows are continuing their steep decline. The Interconnection Consulting Group has analysed a drop in the market of almost 30 per cent in terms of quantity for the years 2003 to 2005, which is however not expected to have any effect on the price level. It looks as though the wooden window will become established as the high-priced premium product in future.
The PVC window, along with the combination window, is in the best position to profit from the marked decline of the wooden window. With growth of 24.4 per cent within the space of three years, the PVC window is expected to remain the number one material group in Switzerland over the next few years as well. Its market share is expected to be as high as 50 per cent by 2005 already.
Happy Isle
According to the market researchers, the Swiss window market with its relatively high prices, only a few big suppliers, healthy rates of growth and high requirements as to quality, appears as some kind of Happy Isle that is attracting foreign suppliers in increasing numbers. As a result, for instance, imports of wooden windows went up by 6.2 per cent in the year 2003, and imports of PVC windows and doors were up by as much s 18.9 per cent.
