The Bauhaus at Gerresheim, Düsseldorf, is the largest megastore within the DIY sector in Europe

Over 28 000 m² in size after extension work in April, the Bauhaus store at Gerresheim, Düsseldorf, is now the largest Bauhaus in Europe and the largest DIY megastore anywhere in Europe. Along with a nearly

7500 m² “Drive-in Arena” for building and construction materials, the Bauhaus offers Europe's biggest specialist tile centre, the “Tiling Arena” for wall and floor tiles, superfine stoneware, natural stone and granite. The tiling arena is in excess of 4 000 m² in size and divided into three areas: drive-in, self-service and tiling displays.
The choice is tremendous, with over 1 000 lines of high-quality tiles and natural stone products that include the ranges of well-known manufacturers: Palazzo, Villeroy & Boch, Jasba, Deutsche Steinzeug, Interbau, Argelith, Benetton, Saloni and Azteca.
Loads can be picked up directly from the drive-in, even with big lorries.
Positioned immediately in the drive-in area are 5.5 m tall display panels with examples of tile-laying patterns and possible applications. The drive-in is directly connected to the display and self-service sections of the tiling area in the Bauhaus store. The generously sized display area features many attractive examples of use. The presentations include genuine living situations such as bathrooms and living rooms, showing a great variety of possible designs for walls and floors.
Curves, not a problem even for tiles.
The complex subject of so-called non-standard sizes is presented by means of exclusive materials like granite, vitreous stoneware, quartz-composite or marble. Specialists undertake to cut tiles to all sizes and shapes in accordance with precise individual requirements. These range from exclusive kitchen work surfaces or vanity unit tops to rounded steps for staircases. Also available is a home measuring and installation service for customers. According to Manfred Kummetz, a member of the Bauhaus management team, the aim in developing the full offer is that of taking on a wholesale function for kitchen studios and furniture stores; the first such partnership agreements have already been concluded.
Project settings provide examples of design.
The intention is also to fulfil unusual wishes expressed by customers, so the offer includes cement mosaic tiles made from traditional materials as well as the faithful reconstruction and reproduction of old patterns from historic buildings. Mosaic glass can be found in a hundred different colours, and customers can request to have their individual ideas planned in advance as a 2-D design.
Customers can take many of the tiles in the range away with them immediately. More than 3 000 pallets of the current range are permanently available, so that even large volumes can be supplied. Bauhaus offers tile-layers and architects special bulk prices, as well as the required quantities.
The bathroom world shows what can be done with tiles, sanitary fixtures and fittings, and accessories.
The Bauhaus bathroom world acts as a complement to the tiling arena. A great number of show baths are set up on a generous display area for customers to choose from. The specialists work together with their customer and a sketch, plus the basic dimensions, to create a 3-D plan to scale of the desired bathroom. During the renovation period the coordinator takes over the planning and supervision of the tradesmen involved in all the different steps. As Kummetz makes clear, “Especially in this area Bauhaus is working in close collaboration with regional contractors.”
The drive-in at Gerresheim, Düsseldorf, offers a great choice of building and construction materials and tiles for tradesmen of diverse kinds and contractors on one-quarter of the total selling space. The “shopping lane” for vehicles is a good 400 m long and comprises an assortment of just under 10 000 products that consists of building blocks, natural stone and garden building materials, chemicals and mortars, absorbent materials and insulation, dry-wall materials, ladders and scaffolding, building tools, builder’s timber in many shapes and sizes, indoor and outdoor drainage, and roofing products as well. All lines are available in typical trade quantities or as bulk packs.
The Bauhaus at Gerresheim, Düsseldorf, is nearly one kilometre in length.
The car, van or lorry drives into the covered hall. Here indoors the products are loaded from the shelving or pallets. Several forklifts are permanently on the go. The next move after loading is to the checkout, where the products are scanned actually on the vehicle.
There is a trade information contact where orders can be completed by phone, fax or email. The prepared order is then ready for collection from 7 the next morning. Ordering in bulk ensures customers a considerable price advantage. They are eligible for a lucrative refund at the end of twelve months when using the Plus card, a bonus programme for the trade. There are other services as well, e.g. the hire of tools, machinery and equipment plus ladders and scaffolding, a repair service, a delivery service (to the building site if preferred), the option of buying on account, and an extended redemption guarantee.

In the timber section, which covers nearly 500 m², customers can find a variety of categories of parquet and laminate in different materials and designs. Panels and the associated laying products round off the range. The sauna and wellness area has been expanded to a total of 250 m². The range here focuses on saunas for indoor installation, and for outdoor use now for the first time, infrared heat cabins, steam showers and jacuzzis.
