Breakdown of the world market

12.04.2007

The world DIY market achieved gross sales of € 406.5 bn in 2005, according to the latest World DIY Report compiled by Fediyma

North America and Europe together make up almost 90 per cent of the world market, although these two continents jointly account for only 20 per cent of the world's population. The World DIY Market Report 2006 from the Federation of European DIY Manufacturers' Associations (Fediyma) reveals that sales on the two continents are running at € 360 bn.
With a 54 per cent share that amounts to US $ 277 bn (€ 235 bn), the North American continent alone accounts for more than half of the entire world market. The countries of the continent of Europe account for a share of 31 per cent that comes to € 126.3 bn.
European DIY retail groups also went beyond the borders of Europe, opening stores in Asia (China and Taiwan) and in South America as well.
Asia and the Pacific region together represent 8.1 per cent of the worldwide volume at € 33 bn. The most dynamic markets here were Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The report further notes that, although China will definitely become an important player, it still only represents 0.2 per cent of the world market.
No significant development has been reported in Africa for some years now. However, some French DIY retailers have moved to Tunesia, Algeria and Morocco in North Africa, where they have now opened several franchised stores.
In the opinion of the authors, South America seems to offer European DIY retailers few opportunities for growth.
Companies from the United Kingdom, France and Germany were the most active when it came to opening international branches of their DIY stores. Cooperative retailers from North America, such as Ace Hardware and True Serve, have also developed beyond the American continent. This contrasts with the behaviour of the top ten North American DIY retailers, who have continued to concentrate on their home market along with Canada and Mexico.
