Europe's DIY markets in figures

17.01.2008
The DIY markets in the individual countries of Europe are performing in very different ways. While some markets are either stagnating or shrinking, others are showing signs of growth

The European DIY market achieves total sales of more than € 120 bn, which puts it directly behind the USA. More than 200 DIY retail groups operate around 14 000 outlets with a combined retail area of 35 mio m². These figures are taken from a market survey which has been compiled by Dähne publishers and is based on the trade directory "DIY Retailers worldwide" and the trade magazine "DIY in Europe", among other sources. Every year the number of stores in the western countries expands by several hundred outlets, despite the process of consolidation and the tough competition. This means the retailers can increase their sales, though at the expense of profitability per unit of area. By contrast the countries of central Europe, and most particularly those of eastern Europe, still offer considerable potential for expansion. Europe's DIY retailers have a total presence of 1 623 stores outside their base country, with 1 521 of these located in Europe.
