The world market in figures

The world DIY market achieved gross sales of € 400 bn in 2006, according to the latest world market report from Fediyma

North America and Europe make up 90 per cent of the world market, although the two continents together account for only 20 per cent of the world’s population. The DIY sales of these two continents amounted to € 360 bn in 2006, according to the World DIY Market Report 2007 from Fediyma, the Federation of European DIY Manufacturers’ Associations. Sales in North America came to US $ 298 bn (€ 229 bn), which amounts to a 57 per cent share, or more than half, of the entire world market. Europe accounted for a total of € 130.4 bn, or a share of 33 per cent. Asia and the Pacific region represented just 7.7 per cent of the worldwide DIY market at € 30.75 bn. Japan, Australia and New Zealand proved to be especially dynamic, like China as well. Nevertheless, even though the report believes that China will definitely progress to become a significant player, its share of the world market still amounted to just 0.25 per cent. There was still no significant progress discernible in Africa, even though French DIY retailers had begun to establish themselves in the north of the continent in 2006, opening several franchised stores in Morocco. In the opinion of the authors, South America seems to offer European DIY retailers few opportunities for growth. The groups from North America have entirely withdrawn from this market. Companies from the United Kingdom, France and Germany were the most active when it came to opening international stores. In America it was cooperative groups such as Ace Hardware and True Serve that saw development outside the American continent. This contrasts with the behaviour of the top ten American DIY retailers, which continued to concentrate on their home markets, and on Canada and Mexico.
