Brakes on shrinkage

21.11.2008
While losses through theft are falling, overall expenditure is rising

Shrinkage cost the retail trade € 71.165 bn worldwide in the period between July 2007 and June 2008. That amounts to 1.34 per cent of retail sales. This means that losses are 1.5 per cent down on the previous year, according to the results of the second Global Retail Theft Barometer from the Centre for Retail Research in Nottingham. However, if the calculation also includes retailers’ expenditure on security measures, loss prevention costs show an increase of € 3.201 bn to € 76.803 bn for the same period.
