Parquet in demand

17.12.2008
The European parquet market is continuing to grow, though there are still major differences in terms of production and consumption in the individual countries

According to the market analysis carried out by the European Federation of the Parquet Industry (FEP), parquet was able to further consolidate its growth in 2007. The industry's combined production in the area covered by the FEP increased by 2.5 per cent, thereby topping the 100 mio m² mark for the first time and levelling out at a volume of 100.334 mio m². The overall result, which shows strong fluctuations on a European level, was largely influenced by the rising volumes recorded in Poland, France and the Czech Republic.
Consumption experienced an even more marked increase than production: here a growth rate of 4.9 per cent was recorded. The trend apparent in recent years persisted, with major differences between the individual countries again in 2007. Generally speaking, most countries (and especially Poland) produced a strong performance. However, the FEP expresses surprise at developments in Hungary and the Czech Republic: consumption dropped by 41 per cent in Hungary, and production by 7 per cent, while consumption in the Czech Republic was 25 per cent down, though production rose by 14 per cent. The decline in production was most extreme in Romania (-25 per cent) and in the group of Nordic countries comprising Denmark, Finland and Norway (-21 per cent). The figures available so far for 2008 show a less rosy tendency for Germany, where the parquet manufacturers have announced a 10.7 per cent decline in production to 5.27 mio m² from January to June. The decline was especially evident in the first quarter, when it amounted to -11.7 per cent. In the second quarter parquet production was -9.6 per cent down on the comparable period in the previous year. In terms of the different segments, mosaic parquet showed a particularly striking decline of -16.8 per cent. Multilayer parquet continued to represent the greatest portion of the volume produced in the FEP countries in 2007, though mosaic squares and lamparquet maintained their positions at 3 and 2 per cent respectively. Solid parquet continued to expand its position still further, growing its market share from 16 to 19 per cent.
In absolute production figures Sweden was still number one at 16.9 per cent, though Poland at 16.6 per cent achieved nearly the same result. Germany followed in third place at 13.0 per cent. In terms of per-capita production, Sweden still headed the field at 1.85 m² per inhabitant, followed by Austria in second place at 1.02 m² per inhabitant. Total production per capita increased to 0.25 m² in 2007.
A new record of more than 112 mio m² was set in terms of consumption in the FEP area. The country with the highest consumption is Germany (18.5 per cent) ahead of Spain (16 per cent), Italy (12 per cent) and France (11 per cent). Austria recorded the highest consumption of 0.90 m² per capita, followed by Sweden (0.78 m²) then Switzerland (0.69 m²). Consumption per inhabitant in the FEP area has risen to 0.28 m².
