DIY stores in comparison

08.07.2010
The list of the top 100 retailers in the U.S. clearly shows which importance, but also which weaknesses the DIY store operators have

Stores, the magazine published by the National Retail Federation, recently published a list of the top 100 retailers in the United States based on their sales in the U. S. The magazine removed, in all but one case, the sales volume and number of stores involved in international markets by the various retailers. Stores' data revealed total sales and number of stores, as well as sales gain or loss during 2009. Using that data, it is possible to compile average-sales-per-store, which can be used as a comparison. In addition to America's three large home center chains, Home Depot, Lowe's and privately-owned Menards, the following table includes Sears Holdings, which now includes Sears and Kmart units as well as quite a number of smaller specialty stores, thereby reducing sales-per-store. Sears, of course, is strong in tools, paints, powered garden equipment and Kmart also is now carrying Sears' brands such as Craftsman tools, so they have been included. Also included are statistics for three chains catering to lower-income groups, which carry smatterings of the kinds of products sold by hardware stores. Dollar General and Family Dollar operate much smaller stores than the major discounters, averaging around 930 m². Dollar Tree is unique in that everything in the store (almost all imported) retails for $1.00. Two other stores are also included for comparison purposes. Bed, Bath & Beyond is a housewares specialty store strong in storage and organization, while Tractor Supply carries all of the basic hardware departments plus catering to the needs of people operating small farms or maintaining large gardens. Units for both stores are approximately 1 400-1 900 m² on average. Walmart, the world's largest retailer, is shown for comparative purposes with its U. S. volume of nearly $ 308 bn. Its international sales contribute approximately $100 bn additional.
