In France, 60 per cent of people say that they are DIY enthusiasts; however, 9 per cent also say that they never do any DIY. The French DIY enthusiast is typically a man (66 per cent) and a homeowner (65 per cent). Three quarters of French people also say, however, that DIY is not a male activity.

This is the result of a survey conducted by the French DIY association FMB, which published the first 'Observatoire sur les Français et le Bricolage' together with the opinion research company Via Voice. The generally positive image that the French have of DIY is also illustrated by the fact that 93 per cent of them think that it is a good way to save money. For seven out of ten French people, DIY is also a way to have fun, relax or enjoy quality time with family or friends.

Large-scale DIY stores also go down well with the French as a sales channel. 93 per cent go to DIY stores and are very satisfied with the advice they receive there.
