Praktiker brings into operation new stores in both Romania and Turkey

Tomorrow, Saturday, will see Praktiker open two new stores outside Germany at the same time. Cluj-Napoca (previously Klausenburg), the fourth largest city in Romania, will see the inauguration of the German group’s third outlet in this country. It will have a retail area of 6 200 m². Due to follow no later than December is another Praktiker outlet for the town of Ploiesti. Next year this Metro subsidiary intends to accelerate the pace of expansion in Romania still further.
Tomorrow will also see Praktiker open its eighth outlet in Turkey, this one in Istanbul. Whereas the company already operates two DIY stores on the Asian side of the city, the new outlet is situated in the European district of Günesli. It is a location that formerly belonged to the French group Mr. Bricolage, which has a retail area of 7 000 m² after renovation work.
Praktiker recorded sales of € 416 mio in eastern Europe over the first nine months of the current year, driving up the sales figures by 10.1 per cent (5.4 per cent in like-for-like terms). According to information from Michael Arnold, the board member with responsibility for international expansion, the company intends to achieve approximately 30 per cent of its sales abroad by 2006, not least through group involvement in eastern and south-east Europe.
