Over the next three years the Australian DIY cooperative group Mitre 10 intends to establish 20 new outlets in its megastore format in New Zealand. The first will be a store with a garden centre in Auckland, which is replacing an existing outlet. Further openings are to follow in Henderson in March and in Papakura next September. The group currently has 123 DIY stores in New Zealand. The rival chain Bunnings, which also comes from Australia, has been represented on the neighbouring islands through company takeovers since 2002, and already operates 35 stores there.
