German DIY sector again gaining ground

The year 2003 brought a like-for-like increase in excess of two per cent

In the 2003 financial year the German DIY retail chains succeeded for the first time in disengaging themselves from the sluggish economic trend and putting an end to the negative sales pattern of recent years. According to information from Manfred Maus, president of BHB (the federal association of German DIY, building and garden stores), consumers spent approx. € 17.27 bn in DIY stores – or around 3.0 per cent more than the previous year (2002: € 16.76 bn). The sales increase amounts to 2.1 per cent in like-for-like terms.
The large-scale discounting campaigns of individual DIY chains have contributed to this development. BHB executive John W. Herbert estimates that the sector’s sales would have increased by no more than 0.5 per cent without the controversial pricing campaigns that took place in 2003. He also says that gross profits were down last year.
