Sustained construction boom in Saudi Arabia

11.03.2004

Since 2002 the construction sector in Saudi Arabia has been experiencing an upswing

The gross capital investment in the country’s entire construction sector is estimated to have been worth around US $ 26.6 bn (€ 21.5 bn) in the year 2003. This emerges from a report issued by the BFAI (Federal German Agency for External Trade). The overall volume of construction work came to just US $ 16.4 bn (€ 13.3 bn) in the year 2002. One of the reasons for this is the strong population growth and the resulting demand for housing, especially in the large cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.
The majority of building materials are supplied by local manufacturers. A figure of US $ 3.4 bn (€ 2.8 bn) is put on imports for the year 2001, corresponding to around ten per cent of all imported goods. Examples of the items included here are paint and chemical products. The demand in the field of interior decoration (including such categories as textiles, sanitary fittings, kitchens, wood and furniture), is almost entirely covered by imports.
