With a sales volume of close on € 120 bn, Europe constitutes the second largest DIY market in the world. Around 200 DIY superstore groups operating more than 14 000 outlets are active in this market, where they have built up a combined retail area of approx. 33 mio m². These figures emerge from a study that has been compiled by the publishing house of Dähne. It is based on the trade directory “DIY retailers worldwide”, which is regularly updated by the publishers, and on news coverage taken from the specialist magazine “DIY in Europe”. The study looks at the individual markets and the different operators in some detail. The report focuses on the processes of concentration and the European multiples’ expansion into new markets. Last year European groups had just over 1 000 DIY stores in operation outside their particular home market, and more than 50 of these were outside Europe.
