B&Q, the biggest DIY retail chain in the United Kingdom, opened its second store in Shanghai on 16 June
Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy, head of B&Q parent Kingfisher, was a participant in the opening celebrations. “We are most satisfied with the progress being made by our first store in Shanghai and this second investment reflects the confidence we feel in China, and particularly in the future of this wonderful city,” said Sir Geoffrey in the course of the opening ceremony.
It was July of last year when B&Q inaugurated its first store in China. There a choice of 16 000 articles was offered on a floorspace of 6 500 m². Here too the majority of products were sourced from Chinese suppliers, though the availability of imported products such as curtains and shelving made the store’s range unique.
Shanghai is the world’s fifth largest city and one of China’s most significant industrial and economic centres. With a current total of 15 million inhabitants it is the most densely populated city in China. The number of inhabitants is expected to double within the next 15 years. B&Q China intends to open five stores altogether in Shanghai.
