The fact that the concept of the DIY event in Kortrijk “is still successful, even after 25 years,” is especially pleasing to its boss, Pieter Desmet. Over the three days of the fair there were 205 exhibitors, the highest number since the fair was launched 25 years ago, displaying their products and services on a space of 14 000 m2. Like last year, about 5 000 visitors made their way to Kortrijk. As the organiser underlined most emphatically, these were genuine trade visitors or buyers.
The exhibitors presented their latest novelties in the product categories of decoration, wood and construction, plumbing, hardware, tools, electrical and gardening.
This anniversary version of the fair was adapted to the developments and trends in the DIY market. The increasing importance of the garden ranges in the DIY stores and the stronger orientation of retailers towards their female customers is even reflected in the fair logo, where the traditional mascot has been given a mate with “green fingers“.
This year’s “Stars in the box” competition for new products, which was launched in 2005, was again very popular, with a field of about 50 products entered by manufacturers. After a preliminary selection had been made, the 21 remaining products competed for the title of “Best new DIY product in 2006”. Two awards were made, one chosen by the jury of professionals consisting of managers and buyers, and the other selected by the public. The pros’ prize went to Henkel for their Perfax Roll-on Magic, which the fair organiser stressed had stood out clearly in the paint and decoration segment. The jury decided on this product because it is the only wallpaper paste that is pink when applied to the wall, then dries to give a transparent finish. This enables the user to see exactly where he has already applied the paste.
The public’s prize went to Tansun Algarve, a product from XB Components. This is a patio heater that has been designed to stand up to all types of weather conditions. It features protective glazing, which means that you can touch it without burning yourself, even when it is heating at full strength.
