The markets of Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are investigated in the up-to-date version. This European comparison reveals that Germany was still the leading do-it-yourself nation in 2009. With a market volume of € 42.96 bn the German sector is positioned far ahead of France, which has the second-largest European DIY market (€ 19.00 bn). This is reflected in the average spend per household as well. In 2009 the average German household’s spend in DIY stores was € 1 072, a sum that was far ahead of the comparable sum of € 694 spent by French households in second place. In terms of comparable levels of income, the average of € 807 spent by households in Germany on DIY requisites is around twice as much as the € 412 spent by the Portuguese.
