Hundreds of new and "green" products

This year's National Hardware Show in Las Vegas attracted the largest number of international buyers in many years

Thousands of buyers from around the world attended the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas in early May because NHS is the 1-stop answer for retailers and distributors on the lookout for new items and lines. This year's show, management reported, attracted the largest number of international buyers in many years. They came knowing they'd find new ideas and new products to set their stores and inventories apart from local competition.
Show management made a number of changes in the show this year, each of them geared to making it easier for buyers to shop the show:
There were several areas devoted to new products, not just one
here was an area highlighting "green" products, making it simple to find them among the 2,600+ exhibitors in the show
The show layout was improved with a much stronger departmental layout so buyers could concentrate in certain areas if they so desired.
An "Inventors' Showcase" section highlighted products waiting to be marketed or with just a minimum of established distribution for more venturesome buyers
With a series of educational seminars as well as a world-class showcase of new as well as established products on the market, the National Hardware Show today is an advanced course in hardlines retailing and distribution. It offers product knowledge sessions, buying opportunities, marketing guidance and even consumer research to help merchants improve their performance and better serve their customers.
"Green" Products were featured in a special display, identifying suppliers and their stands.
And looking ahead to 2011, it will become an even more integral part of industry development with the announcement that next year, the North American Retail Hardware Association will hold its annual convention in conjunction with the Hardware Show, and as host association, it will also incorporate the International Hardware Association bi-annual convention into the 2011 National Hardware Show.
What this means is that buyer attendance, both from the United States and Canada, as well as from around the world, will be substantially greater than it has ever been.
"Why she buys"
In a keynote address, Bridget Brennan, author of a best-selling book, "Why she buys", said that women are responsible for initiating 50 per cent of home improvement projects and "are worth $ 70 billion" to the industry. Retailers who better cater to female customers will find a very enthusiastic group of customers. Too many retailers, she said, fail to recognize the importance of women, either as heads of households or as the motivators behind so many home improvement projects.
