Included among the products manufactured by the company are summerhouses and tool sheds, playground equipment, timber for garden structures, outdoor furniture, planters, privacy fencing, trellises, pergolas, fencing systems and carports. The timber used for these products is spruce, pine or Douglas fir, all obtained from sustainable forestry activities. The company also aims to set high standards where processing is concerned: on the one hand by means of audited working safety, and on the other by using an environmentally friendly, chrome-free impregnating procedure that poses no danger to health. The company’s own production is augmented by bought-in merchandise. This includes metal fencing in aluminium or wrought iron, as well as a small selection of outdoor furniture made of teak. Saunas and heat cabins are also available from Werth-Holz. The programme of products is marketed under two different brand names: “Werth-Holz” is geared to DIY stores, and “CoMe Gartenholz” stands for sales made through timber merchants.
Werth-Holz has positioned itself as a specialist producer of wood for the garden since it was founded in 1977.
Production is carried out in Germany and, since 1992, in Poland as well. Whereas most of the capital-intensive, highly automated production processes are carried out in Finnentrop, the major part of the range of timber for the garden is hand-produced at the plant in Pszczew. A second location in the neighbouring town of Jablonka came into operation this spring. This produces sawn timber, and consequently supplies the raw material for the manufacturing process. Rainer Klee, managing partner, is pleased with this investment, since operating the sawmill means that Werth-Holz has managed to achieve a pricing edge of around 25 per cent. But he also emphasises that the company would have no chance of survival without the plants in Poland, and that “the 150 jobs in Germany are only safeguarded by our production in Poland”.
Approximately 55 000 m3 of timber are prepared annually at the facilities in Poland and further processed in Pszczew. The number of employees amounts to 330 in the peak season. In addition to the production side, part of the distribution to several European countries is controlled from Pszczew as well. Each year around 1 500 HGVs leave the works, transporting a total of about 2 000 different timber products worth over € 12 mio.
The greater part of the range is produced in Pszczew, Poland, mainly by hand.
