This, not least, couldn't be missed at their trade fair appearance at the IPM in Essen: Volmary is increasingly focussing on the issue of organic horticulture, and that along the entire line.
Director of marketing, Raimund Schnecking, puts it more precisely: "Sustainability is an extremely big issue in horticulture, and we consider it along the entire value chain."
This process already begins with the cultivation of particularly resistant varieties. For example, Volmary now offers a range of vegetatively propagated herbs from an EU-certified stock of mother plants.
More specifically, this involves new varieties of herbs, for example the sage "Evita": unlike conventional garden sage, it is propagated from cuttings and therefore, emphasises Volmary, extremely vigorous and healthy in its culture. Tests have shown that it has a higher resistance to powdery mildew.
In the seeds sector, Volmary works closely with De Bolster, a provider of organic seeds with almost 40 years of experience in organic farming. These seeds are gained without the use of chemical plant protection products and chemical fertilisers. Production is controlled in accordance with EU guidelines and is certified to be 100 per cent organic. In addition, only traditional cultivation methods are used when developing new varieties. Which means: all varieties are GMO-free.
Not only that, Volmary has also developed its own product line of organic vegetable plants. These plants also originate from certified businesses which do not use any synthetic plant protection products, but instead work with natural fertilisation. In addition to the organic tomato "Bolstar Sensatica", there is now also the organic bell pepper "Olly", the organic Hokkaido pumpkin "Amoro" and the organic yellow courgette "Ola Gabriella".
Schnecking expects political pressure on synthetic plant protection to mount. So it was purely logical for Volmary to take over the distribution of the product range from Multikraft for the production of ornamental plants. This Austrian company is, as it says itself, the largest manufacturer of treatment agents which include what is known as effective micro-organisms (EM). These products replace synthetic pesticides and have been in use in plant production for several years.
