The Hungarian home improvement market is dominated by German names – even if one of them has not played a role in Germany for almost ten years: Praktiker, currently number two in Hungary, was a national subsidiary of the German Praktiker AG until 2013 and continued as an independent Hungarian company after the bankruptcy of the then number two in Germany. With 20 locations and 141 000 m² of sales space today, Praktiker clearly sets itself apart from the German chain Bauhaus with its three large-scale Hungarian stores.
In first place, however, is the German market leader Obi. It has 31 stores in Hungary with a total sales area of 210 000 m².
From Austria, which is closer both geographically and historically, comes the specialised trade cooperation 3e AG. Under its sales brand Let's do it, 13 small-area stores (a total of 6 500 m²) operate in Hungary; another 46 locations, which are managed by 3e AG but do not use this sales system, are added.
If one adds the 36 building material stores of Stavmat as well as the two home decoration stores of TTL, the statistics come to 151 locations for the home improvement market in Hungary. These figures were determined by the statistics department of Dähne Verlag for DIY International (as of October 2022).
