Sears is competing for the favour of consumers with a new line of retail outlets. The format is called Sears Grand, which the group advertises as the “one-stop home and family center”. The unique aspect of this new line is the unusually large number of services available under the one roof. Examples offered in a press release include a paint mixing station, making up curtains, a car repair workshop and even an eye-testing facility. The new stores also carry the entire range of products that are available in the company’s full-line stores, including DIY articles and a green range in the integrated garden centre. What is more, the new outlets are to be established in off-mall locations and so be closer to more customers’ homes. The new format’s pilot store is opening on 11 October 2003. Further Sears Grand outlets are to follow in the spring and autumn of next year.
