The German DIY chain Hellweg will no longer be buying together with its competitor Toom Baumarkt (Rewe Group). The two DIY operators have ended their cooperation in the joint purchasing company DIY Union. Hellweg will leave DIY-Union on 31 December 2024. According to a press release from Hellweg and Toom, the move was made by mutual agreement. The reason is a difference of opinion about the further development and strategic direction of the cooperation. Toom will continue to operate DIY Union.

DIY Union, which was originally founded in 2011, was first terminated in 2013 and the cooperation was resumed in 2018. On the German market, the two companies have a combined sales volume of around EUR 3 bn.

Hellweg has already established and terminated purchasing companies with other retail groups several times, including with Praktiker/Max Bahr (insolvent in 2013) and Baumax in Austria (exited the market in 2015). With gross sales of EUR 905 mio and 95 stores in Germany and Austria, the company was ranked ninth among German DIY groups in 2023. Toom Baumarkt ranked fifth with EUR 3.086 bn and 310 stores in Germany only.
