Correction: Top 6 DIY stores down 0.7 per cent

The six largest DIY store operators in Germany closed 2024 down 0.7 per cent. In an earlier report dated 21 March 2025, a minus of 1.6 per cent was reported for the top 6 DIY store operators in Germany in 2024. This now had to be corrected due to figures for the previous year that were submitted later. Overall, the companies together generated sales of EUR 19.533 bn in Germany at the end of 2024.

With a minus of 0.7 per cent overall, Germany's largest DIY store chain, Bauhaus, achieved the strongest growth with plus 0.5 per cent. Hornbach came in second place in terms of growth, with an increase of 0.2 per cent. Obi, the number two in Germany, achieved stagnation with plus-minus 0.0 per cent. Rewe, with the Toom Baumarkt, B1-Discount-Baumarkt and Klee Gartencenter sales lines, followed with minus 1.5 per cent. The Hagebau retail division recorded a minus of 2.6 per cent and Globus Baumarkt closed with minus 2.3 per cent. All figures refer to non-like-for-like sales.

According to the preliminary evaluation by the research department of DIY International, the majority of the remaining top 20 DIY store operators in Germany in 2024 are also in the red. Business abroad was somewhat better for the top six German DIY store operators in 2024 than at home, where they generated a small increase in sales on average.

As in previous years, the new Baumarkt + Garten (home improvement stores + garden) statistics, to be published in May 2025, will provide a reliable source of all the key figures for DIY and home improvement stores and garden centres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These include, among other things, detailed figures on the sales areas and locations of retail companies in Germany and abroad.
