20 Home Mart stores to be converted to the Home Depot format

Home Depot has announced the takeover of the Mexican DIY chain Home Mart, the country’s second biggest DIY retailer with 20 stores. The new stores, with an average retail area of 6 400 m2, are to be reformatted in the Home Depot style. This acquisition brings to 39 the number of stores operated in Mexico by the global market leader.
Home Depot gained its first foothold in the Mexican market with the takeover of Total Home with its two DIY outlets in June 2001. Four Del Norte stores were added the following year, and Home Depot has since opened eleven new stores. The Mexican DIY market is estimated to be worth US$ 15 bn (€ 13 bn).
Home Depot’s latest acquisition has led to a change in the company’s expansion plans. Instead of 175 outlets it will now open 185 DIY stores this year, including the 20 now added in Mexico. Ten new openings scheduled for 2004 have been put back to 2005.
