Industry focus on Las Vegas

The National Hardware Show, the biggest hardware and DIY exhibition in the USA, will attracting both local and international visitors to this desert city between 9 and 11 May

Thousands of buyers from all around the world will be gathering in Las Vegas to look for new and interesting products at this year’s event, which is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Gourmet Housewares Show will this year again be staged at the same time.
The fair has grown tremendously in size and number of visitors since the move was made from Chicago several years ago, so that it can now regain its position as a dynamic and exciting exhibition of products being sold in the hardware and DIY retail world. On display during this year’s show will be products from more than 3 200 manufacturers from all over the world. About 11 000 visitors registered their attendance over the three-day event last year.
The products are organised into categories to make things easier for the buyers. The categories are hardware & tools, housewares, lawn & garden and outdoor living, paint and home décor, electrical and plumbing.
As the latest market surveys from Fediyma and other organisations reveal, women are looking for a “softer” look in DIY stores. As a result, this year’s event is putting greater emphasis on paint and décor, housewares, homewares and outdoor living products, which should give retailers the opportunity to enhance their assortment in these categories. The “Global Hardware Exposition” area will give buyers an opportunity to concentrate on sourcing pro-ducts in Asia.
It is not only markets in Europe that are showing signs of saturation. Surplus floorspace is in evidence elsewhere as well, which is making competition increasingly tense. Retailers and wholesalers are being forced to differentiate themselves, so are always looking for new and special products that will distinguish them and their assortment from the competition. Buyers attending this year’s fair will make their first stop at the “New Product World”, where they can examine hundreds of new products quickly and conveniently before embarking on their trek through the halls to visit individual stands.
Competition in retailing is extremely tough all over the world, which is why the show management is offering visitors a choice of seminars and other educational opportunities. These range from the latest consumer research on DIY activities to the growing use of RFID in the industry. These seminars comprise a “college of hardware knowledge” that is intended to help retailers to develop strategies for survival and growth.
A number of buyers from international retail chains will participate in the “buying days” programme run by the Presidents’ Council, a US-based organisation that brings together major American manufacturers and overseas retail chains.
Yet another interesting event for international visitors will be the “International Buyers’ Reception”, which will be conducted at the Las Vegas Convention Center by the Worldwide DIY Council from 6:15 to 8 pm on the evening before the show opens. (Bookings at tdelph@indy.net) The event is sponsored by members of the Council, which consists of companies from the USA and Canada who export to more than 140 countries.
