International orientation

Wire mesh and wire netting comprise the world of the Belgian company Giardino, which is planning to become more involved with exports in the future

Giardino was founded in 1990 by John Lips, who can now look back on more than 30 years of experience in the wire industry. Today he holds the position of commercial manager with the company, having handed over management of the business to his son Edwin Lips in 1998.
The company supplies a broad spectrum of wire mesh and wire netting for use in the garden. Among the products included in the range are chain link and hexagonal mesh, various types and sizes of welded netting, as well as fencing elements, trelliswork and grilles, together with appropriate accessories such as poles and t-stakes, tension wire and strainers.
“We have decided in favour of quality even when it comes to welded netting. For instance, the smallest gauge of wire used for 12.77 mm mesh is 0.8 mm,” explains John Lips. The welded netting is available not only in 10 m and 25 m rolls, but in lengths starting at 2.5 m. The problem of displaying this product in-store has been solved by a special merchandiser that is integrated into the individually adaptable overall concept.
At this year's Gafa the company launched a new profile pole, which has height- adjustable tension wire holders featuring a click system that helps to facilitate the work of putting up a fence.
“Giardino has developed into a significant supplier in the Benelux countries and Germany,” is how John Lips describes the company's position. But the Belgian manufacturer, which is based in Munsterbilzen, about 12 km west of Maastricht, is not only active in the neighbouring countries: nowadays Giardino exports products to twelve different countries including Spain, Finland, Poland, Switzerland and the Baltic states. The company had this international orientation in mind when it came to designing the packaging, which conveys information by means of symbols or pictograms.
Garden centres and DIY stores in Belgium and the Netherlands are supplied direct, while the company works in collaboration with wholesalers and commercial agencies in the other countries. It is also in a position to supply own-label products.
Giardino products are manufactured by contracting parties both within Europe and beyond.
The company has special terms and conditions available to major customers. At the start of the season they receive their goods supplied direct from the manufacturer with an appropriate pricing edge. In case the customer runs out of certain products in the meantime, deliveries can be made from the 7 500 m² storage warehouse in Munsterbilzen at a later date.
