Excel: DIY Show and Garden Expo to reap benefits

London’s new exhibition site in the former Docklands should lend a fresh impetus to the twin fairs DIY Show and Garden Expo

It can be seen from the Millennium Dome and should finally elevate London to the ranks of the elite among international trade fair cities: the brand new Exhibition Centre London (Excel), sited in the former Docklands to the east of the metropolis, close to London City Airport, opens its doors for the first time in November.
A consortium of private investors has put £ 250 mio into the construction of this 65 000 m² exhibition site, which has the potential for expansion to 155 000 m² and is intended to set new standards. The two main London exhibition centres hitherto, Earls Court and Olympia 2, date respectively from prewar and Victorian times.

Chris Leonard-Morgan, exhibition chief of the DIY Show and Garden Expo, which take place annually in January, is enthusiastic about Excel. He views it as a unique opportunity to consolidate London’s position as an exhibition venue for the DIY and gardening sector too. 12 000 m² have been reserved for the twin events from 21 to 23 January 2001, thereby offering the option of expanding the exhibition area by up to 50 per cent. The modern exhibition halls, with a structure unencumbered by any supporting pillars, would also give the event an entirely different atmosphere. Almost 300 exhibitors are expected for the DIY Show and Garden Expo in Excel.
