Home improvement sales in the USA amounted to USD 407.1 bn (EUR 363.7 bn) in 2019 according to an estimation and have therefore grown by around 4.0 per cent. These figures have been published by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) in its Hardware Retailing journal. They roughly agree with the estimations of the US Department of Commerce.
However the number of stores continues to decline, although not as strongly as in previous years. According to the NRHA the number has dropped by 140 to around 38 480 stores. Of these, 19 100 are hardware stores, 9 730 home centres and 9 650 lumber yards.
One of the most significant trends NRHA observed in the last several years is the growth of multi-store operations, as many successful single-store operators added other stores when their owners got ready to retire. Today there are many retailers operating small clusters of stores - two to half a dozen, typically. This is a very significant difference in the US hardware industry from a decade or two ago, according to NRHA.
