The overall DIY market (thus not only the market volume of the stores) increased by 3.3 per cent to EUR 255.93 bn. There are two big winners here, the home improvement stores and online retailers. This is because e-commerce sales of the DIY core ranges have grown by 26.3 per cent in 2020 to a volume of EUR 4.967 bn. Despite the boom in the garden sector also, specialist garden centres recorded a more modest increase in sales of 7.1 per cent. For comparison purposes, the overall volume of sales of garden ranges grew by 9.4 per cent, while the increase in this volume for DIY stores came to 16.9 per cent.
The general assessment of the trends that shaped this year, not only in Germany but in other countries, was confirmed at the conference: homing, home improvement and re-cocooning were the key trends driving demand.
For 2021, market researcher Klaus Peter Teipel expects a decline compared with the record year of 2020. In specific terms, he predicts that home improvement store sales could fall by 4.1 per cent, but from the high level already achieved. Consumers are likely to continue to ascribe importance to their homes and gardens, according to this analysis.
