DIY stores in Germany will achieve a nominal sales increase of 7.0 per cent in 2023. This forecast of a medium scenario was presented by industry expert Klaus Peter Teipel at the German industry conference organised by the BHB association. It would equate to an increase in non-price-adjusted turnover of EU 1.9 bn in total to EUR 28.7 bn. In an optimistic scenario, an increase of 9.2 per cent is forecast, and of 5.0 per cent in a pessimistic scenario.
However, inflation of 7 per cent is also expected in Germany in 2023, so that real growth would probably come to a standstill. "The margin will continue to decline," Teipel said.
Overall, the industry expert characterised the development as "more shadow than light", both in relation to 2022 and the forecast for 2023. With regard to 2022, Teipel said this was "not really a good result".
The industry expert also presented a forecast for the remainder of 2022. At the end of 2022, the DIY and home improvement markets are expected to achieve nominal growth of 10.4 per cent to EUR 26.82 bn. According to Teipel, this result will probably be purely price-driven.
