“From China to America by way of Europe”

New Home Improvement Report published

11.10.2023

The new Home Improvement Report Retail Worldwide is out. Produced as the result of close collaboration between the global retail and manufacturing associations EDRA/GHIN and HIMA and Dähne Verlag, the new statistical reference work comprising 300 pages provides a comprehensive analysis of the international development of the building, DIY and building materials sector. In a compilation that is unique to date, the report looks for the first time at the home improvement market in 61 countries. It also features analyses of the top 20 retailers and of the five global regions, along with graphics illustrating the inflation trend and a new management summary.

In 2022, the global turnover of home improvement retailers was over 696.5 bn euros, an increase of around 10.4 per cent compared with 2021. As in previous years, the North American region accounted for the majority of home improvement retail sales worldwide in 2022 at more than 336 bn euros (a world market share of roughly 48 per cent).

“We are extremely proud to be able to give the global home improvement sector a sound and transparent set of figures with this new report,” says Michael Greiner, the editor responsible for the new Home Improvement Report. “In conducting our research, we have spoken to trade representatives from China to America by way of Europe. We hope that the report now published will provide an excellent overview of the global home improvement market for anyone intending to do business there.”

For the new report, the sales for DIY stores, the building materials trade and furnishings stores (not including the classic furniture trade) have been collated under the home improvement market. The report also contains for the first time source-based figures describing the market in the People’s Republic of China as well as market data based on an empirical data model for 191 countries worldwide.

“Anyone who has ever set out to gather hard facts about the global home improvement industry knows how difficult this can be. As we have always been aware of this, we would like to express our special thanks to all companies worldwide who have supported this report by providing company and market figures,” adds the statistics expert.

Special thanks go also to the members of diyinternational.com’s international network of correspondents. Without them, the report would be a lot poorer in terms of data and market insight.

According to Greiner, the figures indicate that 2022 was “certainly not an easy year” for the international home improvement industry. “But even if the figures for 2022 suggest a rather difficult year, one figure should ultimately linger as a fundamental insight. The top 20 home improvement retailers worldwide grew their sales by an impressive 51.6 per cent between 2017 and 2022. This corresponds to an average annual growth rate of 9.2 per cent and is testimony to the strong boom the global home improvement industry has experienced in recent years,“ says Greiner.

The report is available to all members of the EDRA/GHIN and HIMA associations from their organisation or national member associations. Non-members can order the report now from the Dähne shop.
