The Dutch DIY group Intergamma has become a member of the international DIY association Edra/Ghin. Intergamma includes the DIY store formats Gamma in the Netherlands and Belgium and Karwei in the Netherlands. In total, the group has almost 400 stores with a total turnover of 1.523 billion euros (as of 2022). This makes Intergamma the DIY market leader in the Benelux countries and one of the 15 largest DIY store groups in Europe. With the addition of Intergamma, Edra/Ghin now represents 229 DIY retailers in 79 countries.
Intergamma is partly a franchise organisation, with Gamma and Karwei stores being operated by independent retailers. Around half of the nearly 400 outlets are managed directly by Intergamma.
The company published its first sustainability report in 2022. According to this, the group has reduced its CO2 emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 8 per cent compared with 2021. By 2030, emissions are to be halved by comparison with this base year, and by 2050 they are to be reduced to zero.
"The major global challenges in areas such as sustainability require clear, unified and equal policies within which retailers across Europe can operate on a level playing field," says Joost de Beijer, CEO of Intergamma. "Our expectation is that by joining Edra/Ghin, the interests of the DIY sector can be served even more effectively."
John W. Herbert says of the accession: "Welcoming Intergamma to Edra/Ghin now means that almost all major DIY and home improvement retailers in Europe are in our network. Through the collaboration of Edra/Ghin members, we can ensure that the DIY and home improvement industry comes together on topics that affect all of us, such as sustainability and carbon emissions."
