The French DIY chain Castorama has reduced its CO2 emissions when transporting its products by 16 per cent since June 2022, when it joined the Fret 21 initiative, which is supported by the French logistics industry and backed by the government. At that time, the subsidiary of the British Kingfisher Group had set itself the goal of reducing its emissions by 5 per cent by 2024. The most important measure was to reduce the number of kilometres driven by the contracted transport companies. This has reportedly saved 1 800 tonnes of CO2 per year. In addition, Castorama has also promoted the use of inland waterway vessels for transport. The route between Le Havre and Gennevilliers near Paris transports 82 per cent of the volumes delivered to the three warehouses in Châtres, Brie-Comte-Robert and Moissy-Cmamayel. This has saved more than 1 400 lorry loads and more than 300 tonnes of CO2. The loading of lorries was also optimised.
