Europe: The markets are growing

06.04.2005

The signs in the majority of the eleven DIY markets surveyed by Observateur Cetelem point to growth

Observateur Cetelem has turned the spotlight on the DIY sector in eleven countries within the scope of its 2005 Consumer Barometer. Included here for the first time were the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Just as in 2003, the market researchers ascertained growth in almost every country in 2004, which they attribute to Europeans' incrreasing interest in the subject of do-it-yourself as well as to the fact that the DIY stores are adapting to their customers' requirements.
German consumers spent most on DIY products, averaging a spend of € 899 per household. The lowest spend of € 37 was recorded in Slovakia. Polish households spent more or less the same as households in Spain, Portugal and Italy. In terms of purchasing intentions, the United Kingdom heads the field in 2005 at 42 per cent, followed by Germany at 41 per cent. Portugal is bottom of the table at 9 per cent.
