‘Shoes off!’ was the message at today's opening of the Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt. Designer and architect Patricia Urquiola encouraged attendees to enter her installation ‘Among-us’, touch the textiles on display and sit down on the brightly coloured and unusually shaped couches - ensuring that the exhibition lived up to its name. Urquiola explained that she wanted to create a two-layered space - with digital and physical elements. ‘We live in a very complex world. That's why we incorporated a wide range of textile research into our concept,’ she explained her approach. Her designs include recycled materials as well as digitally created motifs. The installation is located in Hall 12.0, D41.

The trade fair will be showing home textiles from wallpaper and carpets to curtains, tablecloths, fabrics for the bathroom and bedroom, fibres and yarns and furniture upholstery until 17 January. According to Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt, more than 3,000 companies will be showcasing their products and concepts in the exhibition halls over the coming days. With an international participation rate of 97 per cent, a new record has been set. ‘We are living in challenging times, explained Braun and, against this background, described Heimtextil as a ‘stable rock in troubled waters’.
