Central sales of the German specialist retail and DIY store cooperation Hagebau fell by 14.5 per cent to EUR 6.56 bn in 2023. The merchandise business recorded a drop of 14.9 per cent to EUR 5.969 bn. In Germany, sales of goods fell by 15.1 per cent to EUR 5.284 bn. The poor construction sector in Germany is seen as the main reason for this.
In the first four months of 2024, the Hagebaumarkt retail sales division achieved higher growth than the German DIY sector as a whole. With growth of 5.9 per cent compared to the same period last year, the Hagebaumarkt locations were one percentage point above the industry average calculated by the German industry association BHB. From January to April, they turned over EUR 793.626 mio. The above-average growth was "probably very strongly driven by our anniversary year", said Jan Buck-Emden, Chairman of the Management Board. Hagebau will be 60 years old this year and is celebrating the anniversary with numerous promotions.
The start to the anniversary year in Austria was similar. In the first four months, the Hagebaumarkt stores here generated sales of EUR 80.630 mio, 7.3 per cent more than in the same period last year - also one percentage point more than the industry as a whole. However, the bad weather in May had a similar negative impact on sales in both countries as in the sector as a whole.
